Mother Augustine, a Roman Catholic nun, runs a convent school in rural Quebec that specializes in musical education. One day, her sister asks her to take her talented but rebellious niece, Alice, under her wing. The girl, a gifted pianist, reminds Augustine of a past she has tried to forget. However, when the sisters learn that the government of Quebec is implementing a system of public education, they realize that the future of their school, and of an entire generation of religious schools, is in peril.
